Visit Florida Keys & Key West Leadership Update: Strengthening Tourism Accountability and Future Growth
On April 21, 2026, Visit Florida Keys & Key West announced the appointment of David Burke as Chief Administrative Officer, a newly established leadership role designed to elevate operational accountability, compliance, and interagency coordination across Monroe County’s tourism infrastructure. This strategic move reinforces a long-term commitment to responsible tourism growth while enhancing transparency in how tourism resources are managed throughout the Florida Keys.
The Chief Administrative Officer role introduces a strengthened administrative framework focused on compliance systems, financial oversight, contract management, and government coordination. Burke will also guide the implementation of modern AI-enabled administrative systems, positioning the organization for greater efficiency and real-time operational insight. Working alongside CEO Kara Franker, this leadership addition is expected to improve accountability across all levels of tourism investment and partnership execution.
A Key West resident since 2020, Burke brings deep regional experience shaped by his leadership within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, where he served as deputy superintendent and acting superintendent. His background in environmental stewardship, operational management, and interagency collaboration aligns directly with the evolving needs of Florida Keys tourism oversight.
Burke’s leadership foundation includes a 32-year career in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of captain. His experience spans critical roles such as Chief of Staff at Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West and Carrier Strike Group TWELVE, along with strategic assignments at the Pentagon focusing on cyber, communications, and space operations. This extensive background positions him to effectively manage the intersection of tourism, government policy, and environmental responsibility.
Academically, Burke holds a Bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy, a Master’s in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego, and a Master’s in National Security Strategy from the National War College. This combination of education and high-level operational experience supports both strategic planning and day-to-day administrative execution within a complex tourism ecosystem.
As Burke prepares to assume the role on May 18, 2026, the focus remains on strengthening tourism infrastructure through improved transparency, streamlined partnerships, and modernized systems. This leadership update reflects a forward-looking approach to maintaining a balance between visitor demand and environmental preservation, ensuring that the Florida Keys continue to operate as a world-class destination built on accountability and sustainability.
