Southernmost Buoy Renovation in Key West: Iconic Landmark's Exciting Upgrade & Temporary Relocation
The Southernmost Buoy in Key West, one of Florida's most beloved landmarks, is about to receive an extensive renovation, ensuring it remains a standout attraction for years to come. After enduring hurricanes Ian and Helene, along with Tropical Storm Alex, the city of Key West has announced significant upgrades to the seawall and surrounding plaza, designed to safeguard the site against future storms and enhance visitor experiences.
Starting mid-August 2025 through late summer 2026, the iconic SouthernMost Point buoy at South and Whitehead Streets will temporarily close as crews complete structural and aesthetic improvements. Enhancements will include a reinforced seawall designed to withstand powerful tropical storms, along with a renovated plaza featuring improved landscaping, upgraded pathways, and additional space for capturing memories.
Travelers visiting during the renovation period need not worry about missing the quintessential Key West photo opportunity. A temporary replica buoy will be conveniently placed at Duval Street Pocket Park (1400 Duval Street), maintaining the tradition of taking selfies at the famous "Southernmost Point." The original location is expected to reopen with a grand celebration by late summer 2026.
Visitors are encouraged to capture their original-site selfies before mid-August 2025. During the renovation period, the Duval Street area offers plenty of vibrant local dining options, unique galleries, and boutique shopping experiences, turning a simple buoy photo into a delightful Key West adventure. Post-renovation, guests can look forward to an even more memorable landmark experience, perfect for combining with other popular island activities such as sunset sails, snorkeling excursions, and lively music performances.
