Key West to Host Annual Kelly McGillis Classic International Flag Football Championship


The 2023 Kelly McGillis Classic International Women's & Girls' Flag Football Championship is just around the corner, bringing teams from all around the United States and the world to Key West, Florida. From January 24th to the 30th, players ranging from 9 years old to seniors will compete in multiple divisions, with pre- and post-tournament activities and three days of competition.

The event is named for and endorsed by the critically acclaimed actress and former Key West resident Kelly McGillis, who starred in famous films such as "Top Gun" and "Witness". According to Diane Beruldsen, president and founder of the International Women's Flag Football Association, over 30 teams from countries such as Morocco, Jamaica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala are expected to join McGillis for the 31st annual championship.

The tournament will begin with opening ceremonies on Thursday, January 26th from 4:30-6pm at the Half Shell Raw Bar. Following the ceremonies, a Kelly's Players Parade will take place with the tournament teams parading throughout Key West's Historic Seaport area and Duval Street. The official registration party will take place later that evening at the Bourbon St. Pub.

The competition will kick off on Friday morning at Wicker Field Sports Complex, with games continuing until the playoffs and World Challenge Game on Sunday. In addition to the tournament, players and fans can also enjoy a variety of social events throughout the week, including a pool party, women's speaker series and bike tour. The competition will also feature an inaugural "Messi Burger" eating contest on Saturday, with McGillis as one of the celebrity judges, and a Miss IWFFA Contest on Saturday night. Awards will be presented Sunday night at El Siboney.
