Key West Smathers Beach Road Project Milestone: All Four Lanes Open
The Smathers Beach Road Project in Key West has reached a major milestone with all four lanes now open to traffic as of April 2025. The newly elevated roadway features smooth, freshly striped asphalt, a widened sidewalk, and clearly marked bike lanes, inviting both drivers and cyclists to experience the scenic coastal route. Palm trees and a meticulously reconstructed pedestrian promenade add to the visual appeal along the boulevard.
Construction teams are currently enhancing the north side with upgraded sidewalks, improved landscaping, and advanced drainage systems, as part of a broader initiative to boost stormwater resilience and pedestrian safety. The project includes a raised roadway—up to 17.5 inches—to mitigate tidal flooding, a state-of-the-art stormwater pump system, three pedestrian crosswalks equipped with Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons, and updated signage and striping. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2025, with additional unveilings and celebrations planned as work concludes along the north and eastbound segments.
