Fort Zachary Taylor Beach Closure – Key West State Park Update
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park in Key West has temporarily closed its beach area as of April 7, 2025, due to an essential Florida beach renourishment project. This effort is part of a long-term strategy to combat storm erosion and restore the park’s shoreline to its original safe and scenic condition. The project entails adding new sand to the beach to improve public safety and enhance the natural environment.
Although the Fort Zachary Taylor beach closure is currently in effect, the rest of the Key West state park remains fully accessible to visitors. Guests can continue to explore the Civil War-era historic fort, relax at shaded picnic spots, and enjoy walking paths and ocean views. The Cayo Hueso Café also remains open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., providing convenient refreshments within the park.
Visitor access and pricing remain unchanged:
-
$6 per vehicle (up to eight people)
-
$4.50 for single-occupant vehicles or motorcycles
-
$2.50 for pedestrians or cyclists
The park operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to sundown, with the historic fort closing at 5:00 p.m.
During the closure, beachgoers are encouraged to visit alternative nearby destinations such as Smathers Beach or Higgs Beach, which remain open for swimming, lounging, and water activities. Guests should be aware that beach access timelines may change depending on weather conditions and project progress.
For the most current updates regarding the Fort Zachary Taylor beach closure, it is recommended to check the official Florida State Parks website or contact the park directly before planning a visit.
