The Key West Art & Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of its forthcoming exhibition The Antic Humor of Richard Watherwax, a celebration of the photographer’s distinctive blend of humor and artistry. The Society invites the public to a special reception on Friday, September 13, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Key West Museum of Art & History, located at 281 Front Street. The event is free to attend and marks the launch of this exciting exhibition.
Richard Watherwax, a photographer with over 30 years of experience in commercial, editorial, advertising, and wedding photography, has become a well-known figure in the Key West art scene. After spending 25 years shooting in Manhattan for major clients such as Coca Cola, Buick, TWA, Revlon, and AT&T, Watherwax relocated to Key West, where he found artistic freedom in the island’s laid-back atmosphere. Free from the demands of high-pressure clients, he developed a unique style that many affectionately call "Watherwax Whimsy."
Watherwax is perhaps best known for his world-famous print, Fat Cat Capsizing, which has been reproduced on T-shirts, tote bags, towels, and coffee mugs sold around the world. His body of work also includes several published books, such as Cat Tales (1978), The Cat Who Drank Too Much (1979), and Tales of Old Key West (1989), a farcical history of the island. A particular highlight of his career was entering his cat, Willoughby, into the 1989 Key West mayoral race, where she garnered an impressive 37 votes.
Watherwax's work often features his two favorite subjects: women and cats. His photography, particularly his images of women, highlights the beauty of the female form with a playful sense of humor. Visitors to the exhibit can expect to see this unique perspective, which has earned Watherwax a loyal following both in Key West and beyond.
