Papa's Poems & Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition
When: July 19, 2023 5:00 PM
Where: The Gardens Hotel, 526 Angela St, Key West, FL 33040
The annual Hemingway Days Festival, known for celebrating the legendary Ernest Hemingway and his innovative writing style, will host an event titled "Papa’s Poems & the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition" from 5:00-7:00 PM. Organized by the Key West Art & Historical Society, the event will be held at The Gardens Hotel on Angela Street. The free-admission gathering offers attendees a chance to enjoy cool beverages from the open bar while immersing themselves in the literary world.
- The evening will kick-off with an exclusive showcase by the Key West Poetry Guild, presenting some of Hemingway's less known poetry along with the guild members' own work.
- The next highlight is the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, where the winners will be announced, followed by the first public reading of the winning story.
The event was conceptualized by Shaughnessy as a celebration of Hemingway's fervor for life, inspired by the gritty, hard-scrabbled lifestyle he found in Key West. These real-life inspirations often turned into characters in Hemingway's only novel set in the United States, "To Have and To Have Not". The coordination of the poetry segment will be managed by Vicki Boguszewski, also known as the Poet Jah Love, from the Key West Poetry Guild. She's a seasoned event organizer, having previously emceed and led poetry events such as the 2022 Womenfest "Key West Women & Words" and a Key West Sidewalk Poem Bike Tour.
