Lobster Mini Season 2027 in Key West
When: July 28 - July 29, 2027
Where: Monroe County
Florida’s two-day spiny lobster sport season returns Wednesday, July 28, and Thursday, July 29, 2027. Every July, Lobster Mini Season transforms Key West and the Florida Keys into one of the state’s most exciting diving and snorkeling destinations. The annual season always takes place on the final consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, giving recreational harvesters two days to search the warm waters surrounding the Keys before the regular lobster season begins August 6.
Key West combines the challenge of finding Florida spiny lobster with clear tropical water, reef scenery and the excitement of bringing home a fresh catch. Local dive operators and charter captains can help visitors reach productive areas while explaining equipment, safety procedures and current harvest regulations. Reservations should be made early because the limited two-day season creates strong demand for guided trips.
The daily bag limit in Monroe County is six spiny lobsters per person. Each lobster’s carapace must measure more than three inches, and the measurement must be taken while the lobster remains in the water. Every harvester must carry and use an appropriate measuring device. Possession limits apply both on and off the water. The possession limit on the water is equal to the daily bag limit. Off the water, possession is limited to the daily bag limit on the first day and twice the daily bag limit on the second day.
Unless legally exempt, each participant must have a valid Florida recreational saltwater fishing license and spiny lobster permit. Lobsters must be landed whole, and separating the tail from the body in state waters is prohibited. Egg-bearing lobsters cannot be harvested. Recreational traps and equipment that punctures, crushes or penetrates a lobster are also prohibited.
Night diving is prohibited throughout Monroe County during the two-day sport season. Lobster harvest is prohibited in Dry Tortugas National Park, Everglades National Park, sanctuary no-take zones and other protected waters. Harvest is also prohibited in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park during sport season. Participants should review official FWC regulations and current protected-area maps before entering the water because local closures and sanctuary boundaries can be difficult to identify without advance preparation.
Divers and snorkelers should use a properly displayed dive flag, stay alert for boat traffic, dive with a buddy and avoid touching or damaging coral. Essential equipment includes a measuring gauge, net, gloves and a legal non-puncturing tickle stick. Visitors unfamiliar with local waters should strongly consider joining an experienced Key West lobster charter.
After returning to shore, participants can prepare their catch or visit a participating cook-your-catch restaurant. Lobster Mini Season in Key West offers two unforgettable days of diving, outdoor adventure and fresh Florida seafood. Book Key West lobster charters and guided dive trips early for July 28–29, 2027.
