Originally conceived as a one-time tribute to honor Petty’s legacy, The Broken Hearts have quickly become a much-loved, continuously requested act in their own right. This stellar tribute band is composed of seasoned musicians who knew and loved Tom Petty’s music on a personal level, ensuring an authentic, heartfelt tribute.
The band’s story begins with Charlie Souza, a former bandmate of Tom Petty from their Mudcrutch days, and vocalist Shawn Scheller. When Petty tragically passed away in October 2017, Souza and Scheller created The Broken Hearts to celebrate the music and spirit of their friend and music icon. This temporary project quickly grew into a sensation, with Souza, Scheller, and an incredible lineup of veteran musicians finding themselves repeatedly called back for encore performances.

Charlie Souza - A bassist with history. Having played alongside Tom in Mudcrutch, Souza brings an intimate understanding of Petty’s music to each performance.

Shawn Scheller - Lead vocals. Scheller’s passion for Tom’s music makes him the perfect voice to bring these beloved songs to life.

Robin Swenson - Keyboards. Swenson, a legend in his own right, has performed with Air Supply, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and 3 Dog Night, lending the band a touch of pure classic rock magic.

Joe Sanders - Guitarist. Sanders adds a dynamic sound that complements Petty's signature style.

Scott Lockhart - Drummer. Lockhart keeps the energy alive with every beat, adding to the powerhouse rhythm section that makes The Broken Hearts a must-see.
In 2018, after receiving an overwhelming response from fans, the group decided to take the tribute on the road, transforming into a full-time touring band. The Broken Hearts now tour the country, bringing Tom Petty’s hits, heartfelt lyrics, and electrifying energy to audiences who remember—and still love—every word.
