Explore Florida Keys History at the Key West Museum of Art & History

The Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House is a celebrated landmark near Mallory Square that embodies the rich cultural heritage of the Florida Keys. Built in 1891, this four-story red brick structure showcases impressive Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and a storied past—from serving as a post office and courthouse to its current role as a museum. Its two floors feature rotating monumental sculptures by Seward Johnson, including three-story interpretations of classic artworks, as well as life-sized figures capturing everyday moments.

Highlights of the museum include a permanent exhibition of 59 sketches by conservationist Guy Harvey inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s acclaimed novel and 15 rarely seen Impressionistic paintings by celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams. An engaging exhibit on the Overseas Railway further delves into Key West’s historic connection to the mainland, celebrating its maritime legacy.

Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the museum offers free admission for children under seven and active military personnel, with additional online discounts and group rates. Venue rentals and educational programs also provide a unique setting for events that celebrate Key West’s art, architecture, and history.
